* Charcoal Burning was done by men called
"Wood Colliers".
Wood burning, charcoal burning, or making charcoal, is a well respected ancient craft
that has been around since before the Roman invasion of Europe, the East, and England. Excavated evidence is found across
the continent far and wide. * In-the-ground "Pit" charring is one of the earliest forms of making charcoal. It is a less
effective method than "Clamp" charring. An above-the-ground "Clamp" allows better control of the oxygen to the wood
for a more complete char. * Charcoal burning was a very important industry for
many years. It produces a hotter heat than just burning the wood itself. Charcoal was used for it's high heat
for making weapons in the forges and for home heating. It is also used in making gunpowder and medicines. Byproducts of charcoal were
also used in glassmaking and soap. * Charcoal burning is very important in everyone's history. It helped all but devistate
most of Europe's forests by the 14 & 1500's... and in later years, was beginning to help devistate the forests of
New England in the New World.
* For purposes relating to medieval, renaissance and colonial periods, this is a
version of the history of Charcoal Burning in a very small nutshell !

*You may call me "R.J.", and I am your Wood Collier. During my Live Exhibit-Demonstration,
while dressed in "Period Garb", I "play" with the public by introducing myself and pointing out the smoking representation
of a Charcoal Clamp on the site. I begin by telling them information about Charcoal Burning and The Life of a Wood Collier.
I ask them a few questions and in return, I get asked questions. It is usually quite an informative experience for the public,
as well as myself.(I Do love my job !) * Some people to this very day remember their grandfathers or even
their fathers having spoken about Charcoal Burning the "old fashioned way" !

| A CONSTANT Work In Progress |
* 'Ren-Faires' or Civil War Reinactments,
for example,
have the townspeople who make candles, bake bread, or use spinning
wheels... which are "regularly shown" period livelihoods...
...but one odd, yet so very an important job, 'CHARCOAL BURNING',
is not usually seen
"Educationally Exhibit-Demonstrated"
! ! !
(well sometimes there are exceptions to the
rule...
but try to FIND some ! )
* We hope we have peaked your interest
enough for you and your organization
to want to learn more about the
"Live Educational Exhibit-Demonstration"
of Charcoal Burning !
